In Love in Lockup, Hollywood starlet Amber arrives at Roland Correctional convicted of poisoning her rich husband, Harrison, and during intake she catches the warden, Cross, secretly watching one of her old films. She decides to use him. The Love in Lockup ending clears her of the murder: Cross, suspended over their relationship, keeps digging, the family maid testifies at the retrial, and the court frees Amber and orders her stepdaughter, Chloe, taken into custody for first-degree murder. It all plays out over 30 episodes of this 16+ prison drama.
An offer made in the warden's office
Episode 1 strips Amber of her fame fast: a guard harasses her during the strip search, and when she slips out of line, she walks in on Cross watching one of her old adult films. In episode 2 she learns that the inmate boss, Vera, is sleeping with a guard, and sees how favors are earned here.
In episode 3 Amber takes over the warden's laundry, and in episode 4 she names her price: time off her sentence in exchange for her body. Cross says she is crossing a line, yet in episode 5 he has her moved to a better cell.
An inmate is offering sex for a shorter sentence to the man who controls her cell, her job and her punishments, and soon they are in a secret sexual relationship (episodes 9–12). Whatever the drama later calls it, a warden who accepts is abusing his position, and the investigators who arrive in episode 24 treat it that way.
Amber's confession about the night Harrison died
When Cross finds Amber locked in the laundry room in episode 5, she tells him her mother died in a rundown house in Texas telling her to "get out, no matter what." In episode 6 she describes growing up poor, making adult films and meeting Harrison, who took her to Hollywood and made her a star.
In episode 7 Cross asks why she killed him. Amber admits she was climbing at first, then fell for Harrison, only to find him cheating within six months and planning to replace her with a new face:
"So don't act surprised I wanted him dead."
Amber says she bought poison from a dealer who promised one drop would kill, waited ten minutes outside Harrison's door, heard nothing and went to bed; in the morning the police were at the door. In episode 8 Cross quietly pulls her case file and has someone watch Chloe.
The preacher's son
At chapel in episode 14, a preacher who keeps staring at the warden tells Amber that God himself couldn't save someone like her, and Cross has him escorted out. In episode 15 Cross reveals that the preacher is his father, who beat him at 12; ever since, he has tied his right hand down to sleep. Amber tells him:
"He wasn't saving you. He was controlling you."
Blackmail, a suspension and a case with holes
In episode 16 another inmate, Lucy, holds up a cufflink only the warden wears, says she saw them in the chapel and demands cigarettes every week. In episode 17 Amber admits to herself that she meant to use Cross and is now afraid for him.
In episode 18 Amber tells Cross, and soon after Lucy is caught with contraband she says isn't hers. Convinced she was punished for what she knows, Lucy tells Vera about the affair in episode 19, and the rumor spreads.
In episodes 20–21 Amber ends it, saying she never really thought he could cut her sentence. Cross answers:
"And what if I was never treating this like a deal?"
Then Cross tells Amber what he found in Harrison's autopsy file (episode 21). Organophosphate kills within minutes, and no dose explains the delayed reaction she described. His investigator learns in episode 22 that Chloe works in a chemistry lab where organophosphate stock has gone missing, although records place her away from home that night.
Chloe has the lab logs tidied and traces the investigator to Roland Correctional. In episode 23 she visits Amber with forgiving words, then vows that Amber will never walk out, and pays the deputy warden a million dollars for material from the prison's backup surveillance footage. In episode 24 Cross is suspended over the relationship, and the deputy becomes acting warden.
Love in Lockup ending explained: the ice tray
In short: In the Love in Lockup ending, the former maid, Maria, testifies that Chloe made a fresh ice tray the afternoon before the murder, and the tray tests positive for the poison that killed Harrison and carries Chloe's fingerprints. Amber's conviction is overturned and she is released, and Chloe is taken into custody on first-degree murder charges.
In episode 25 the deputy warden tells Amber to keep quiet for Chloe's sake, and Amber realizes she has been Chloe's fall guy. Meanwhile Cross's father urges him to save his career by blaming Amber, and Cross refuses:
"She never seduced me. I went to her. Willingly."
Cross tells his father he loves her. In episode 26 he slips past the guards to show Amber that the poison she bought came in the same bottle as Harrison's blood pressure pills, so that night she grabbed the wrong one. He offers to have her smuggled to the docks, but she refuses to let him take the fall. They say they love each other.
In episode 27 Amber remembers Chloe turning up at the house the day before Harrison died, claiming a lab emergency, and Cross goes looking for Maria, a maid Chloe fired after the death. In episode 28 the state Supreme Court grants Amber a new trial, and Chloe tells the deputy she doesn't want Amber reaching court alive.
The deputy orders Amber to sign a statement saying she seduced Cross of her own free will, withholding food and water until she does, and she refuses. In episode 29 the retrial motion fails because Maria cannot be found, and the original sentence stands.
Episode 30 reopens the case. Cross takes the stand as Amber's lover, knowing he could lose his license forever, and insists the evidence proves her innocent. Maria testifies that Chloe came home early, filled a fresh ice tray despite a full bin of ice and later told her to throw it out, and that she kept it.
The tray tests positive for the same organophosphate found in Harrison's blood and missing from Chloe's lab, and it carries Chloe's fingerprints. The court also hears that a hitman Chloe sent after Maria was stopped at the Mexican border. Amber is released immediately, and Chloe is arrested for first-degree murder.
The Love in Lockup ending clears Amber of murder without making her blameless, and the relationship that saves her began as a trade between a prisoner and her jailer. Cross pays for it with his job, while the deputy warden who abused the same power for money simply drops out of the story.
