A spilled sample and a witness at the door

In episode 1 Vivian is going over an equation with Nathan when the scent of a test sample starts to affect her. In episode 2 she sends the rest of the class home early, keeps Nathan behind, and they sleep together. Then Sophia walks in on them.

In episode 3 Vivian pleads with her:

"Sophia, please don't tell anyone. I'm begging you."

Sophia's price is a high score on her practical, and Vivian agrees. It is blackmail, and it is only the first time Sophia uses the secret.

On a Sunday in episode 4, Vivian blames the spilled sample for losing control, but Nathan still wants her. She tells him to stop, then says yes when he asks, and Sophia walks in on them again and insists on joining.

In episodes 5 and 6 the three record a video together, while Daniel asks for directions to his wife's lab.

In episode 7 Daniel walks in with flowers and says it seems he interrupted something. Vivian calls it an emergency experiment. At home in episode 8 Daniel notices a perfume that isn't hers. Vivian's guilt is real ("I can't lose Daniel"), but she keeps lying.

In episode 9 their boss praises the results of the first formula and assigns all three of them to develop the next version. Nathan asks Vivian to dinner, just the two of them, and she shuts him down:

"To me, everything was just work. The drug, the data, the protocol. Nothing more."

In episode 10 Sophia tells Nathan that Vivian is only using him for data and will discard him. Nathan answers, "I trust her."

In episode 11 Vivian sets rules all three accept: clear mutual consent for every contact, and the video stays confidential, never used as leverage.

In episode 12, after working all night on the final Lust-02 sample, Vivian warns that its toxicity is far too high. Then the sample breaks, the vapor overwhelms all three, and Nathan calls out for Vivian. Sophia makes a vow:

"I'll destroy both of you. I swear it."

Episode 13 shows the damage: Lust-02 causes hallucinations and fries the nervous system. As research team leader, Vivian orders that line of research stopped. Sophia calls it their only chance to rise and claims Lust-02 as hers.

Real feelings and a husband's suspicion

In episode 14 Nathan wants proof that his feelings are real, so he and Vivian skip the drug. In episode 15 he asks what they are, and Vivian calls it "just a physical thing," though she privately admits that she really did desire him.

In episode 16 Vivian refuses to stay late, and Sophia seizes the moment. She drugs Nathan and tries to force herself on him while he shouts at her to stay away, then tells Daniel that his wife is cheating with Nathan and dares him to invite them both to dinner.

In episode 18 Daniel insists on hosting the dinner, asking whether Vivian is afraid he will notice something.

At the table Nathan remembers that Vivian can't stand spicy food, and Daniel explodes: "You dare touch her right in front of my eyes?!"

In episode 19 a storm keeps the guests overnight, with Nathan on the sofa. Daniel confronts Vivian about the looks at the table, she claims she rejected Nathan a long time ago, and Daniel promises to watch every move she makes.

The Chemistry Of Lust ending explained: the night everything burns

In short: Daniel learns the truth in the worst possible way. In episode 20 he finds Nathan forcing himself on Vivian in their home and beats him, and in episode 21 he throws Vivian out with divorce papers to follow. The Chemistry Of Lust ending offers no reunion for Vivian and Nathan and closes on a warning that "the real fun is just beginning."

During the night the guests stay, Nathan comes to Vivian. She tells him to stop and let her go, and he answers, "You're mine." What follows is an assault; the series does not say whether a drug is involved.

Daniel catches them and beats Nathan until Vivian screams that he is going to kill him. "I was forced!" she tells Daniel, but he refuses to let her touch him.

Episode 21 is the verdict. Daniel demands to know how it felt, calls her a liar, tells her she doesn't deserve to carry his last name, and sees all their memories "reduced to ashes." Then he sends her away:

"Get out of my sight. Don't let me see you in this city ever again."

Daniel adds that the divorce papers will follow and that everything is over, and the series closes on one more line: "The real fun is just beginning, Vivian."

The Chemistry Of Lust ending makes good on the vow Sophia swore in episode 12. Vivian loses her marriage and is ordered out of the city, Nathan is beaten in front of her, and Sophia's tip to Daniel is never exposed on screen.

Where Vivian, Nathan, Sophia and Daniel end up

  • Vivian: thrown out by Daniel and told never to show herself in the city again, with divorce papers to follow (episode 21).

  • Nathan: beaten by Daniel after assaulting Vivian (episode 20); his future is not shown.

  • Sophia: the student who told Daniel, with no consequences shown for the blackmail or the drugging.

  • Daniel: ends the marriage, saying everything is over.
