A dream power with the wrong address

This 16+ drama starts with a power Brooke found three months earlier: if she thinks of someone before falling asleep, she ends up in their dream (episode 3). In dreams nobody makes fun of her body, so she goes clubbing with a rock star and plays beach volleyball.

Then she chants Ethan's name 180 times, planning to confess to him, and opens her eyes in Kane's dream instead (episodes 1 and 3). Kane, the campus bad boy, stars on the school hockey team alongside Ethan, and Brooke once watched him slam an opponent over the boards.

In that first dream Kane grabs her as she tries to run and kisses her before she can react (episode 3). The wrong turns keep happening, and the dreams become a secret relationship; when Kane asks to meet in real life, Brooke privately rules it out (episode 2). Some nights he turns up hurt after a game, and she patches him up and lectures him about his scars (episodes 7–8).

Kane's new team medic

Brooke's advisor, Professor Hayes, signs her up as the hockey team's part-time summer medic, with the National College Hockey Championship coming up (episode 6). On her first day, she hears Kane through the manager's door refusing an intern and a female medic: "It's either her or me" (episode 9). Then he turns and sees her.

In episode 10 Ethan walks in, introduces Brooke as the good girl from next door and warns Kane not to mess with her. Kane reverses himself on the spot, keeps her on and asks if she knows who he is (episodes 11–12). She says no, and in episode 13 he remarks that his girlfriend has a mole in the same place as hers. He remembers everything.

What Ethan's family did to Brooke's

After a dinner with Brooke, Ethan asks if she came looking for him the year he graduated, and apologizes (episode 15). Episode 16 explains. Ethan grew up next door and protected chubby little Brooke from bullies, until her father's construction company was hit with a fraud investigation. Her father swore he was set up, then jumped, and Ethan's family moved away overnight without even sending flowers to the funeral.

Brooke once took a train to cheer Ethan on the year of his college entrance exams and found him kissing another girl; her mother slapped her for chasing "that Miller boy" (episode 17). Ethan now says the girl threw herself at him, and when Brooke falls asleep thinking of him, she lands in Kane's dream again.

The captain makes his claim

Kane, stung that she claimed not to know him, makes her say who he is. In episode 18 he admits he is the only one who remembers the dreams, then declares himself her boyfriend and says he won't let her look at anyone else again.

Awake, the claim turns protective. In episode 19 a few players mock Brooke's weight and bet she will be gone within a week, and Kane threatens to pull them all off the championship roster. When Brooke says she is used to it, he answers:

"You shouldn't get used to this. If you're unhappy, you should show it. I've got your back."

Brooke then learns that when the school planned to cut the hockey program, Kane turned down a junior league spot and spent six months chasing sponsors to save it (episodes 21–22). She starts staying at the rink all day, and Kane walks her back to her dorm every night.

The truth behind Brooke's dreams

In episode 23, thinking of Kane, Brooke lands in Ethan's dream instead, and it is a memory. Teenage Ethan begs his father to let him see Mr. Reed, Brooke's father, in the hospital, and his father holds him back with a warning (episodes 24–25):

"If you want to make it in this world, the first thing you learn is how to cut people off."

Ethan's father adds that Mr. Reed's case is a stain and that Brooke doesn't fit into his son's future. Brooke wakes up crying.

In episode 26 Brooke's narration fills in the rest. After her father's death, her mother's mind broke, and on bad days her mother hurt herself or hit Brooke. Her father's name was eventually cleared, but after Brooke got into college, insomnia set in, followed by the hallucinations that became her dream adventures.

Brooke's therapist calls the dreams a coping mechanism, a private utopia where nothing can touch her. Ethan, the trigger, was locked out. Kane is the anomaly, and Brooke can't explain how he walked into a world she built.

Dreaming of the Hockey Captain ending explained: awake, with Kane

In short: Brooke tells Ethan she stopped hating him long ago and thinks she has stopped loving him too. Then she tells Kane she remembers every dream, and as the dreams fade she chooses to stay awake and love him in real life.

In episode 27 Kane drops off a bag for Brooke: heat wraps and medicine for period cramps. Kane had once found out she was swallowing painkillers to sleep through the pain, told her to stop and promised to bring her the right supplies himself (episode 28). That small kept promise gives her the courage to face Ethan.

In episode 29 Brooke tells Ethan she hated his family when her father died, but now understands that protecting yourself is human. The friend he has been showing around turns out to be the girl she saw him kiss; he swears she isn't his girlfriend and that he couldn't leave her alone in a new city (episode 30). Brooke sees the pattern and tells him:

"But for me, there's nothing more cruel than being treated the same as everyone else."

In episode 31 Kane is waiting outside the club and says she looks like she finally wants to stay. The dreams she escaped into for years are fading, and for the first time that doesn't scare her. She tells him she remembers the dreams, all of them, and when he asks what happens now, she says, "Now I stay awake." He kisses her forehead, says he likes her better in real life anyway, and takes her hand.

The Dreaming of the Hockey Captain ending ties the romance to Brooke's recovery. The dreams began as a hiding place from her father's death and her mother's illness, and she chooses Kane at the moment she no longer needs to hide.
